Department of Biochemistry
General Information
History: The Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science and Letters, Iğdır University, was established based on the proposal of the Iğdır University Rectorate to open departments and academic branches within the Faculty of Science and Letters. This establishment was approved in accordance with Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, as amended by Law No. 288, following the decision taken during the Higher Education Executive Board meeting on August 2, 2017.
Program Outputs: Graduates of the Department of Biochemistry are trained as experts who can comprehend the functioning of biological systems at the molecular level, understand the chemical foundations of biological processes, and follow innovations in the field of biochemistry. The general outcomes of the program are as follows:
- A strong knowledge base in the fields of molecular biology, genetics, chemistry, and biochemistry
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques and biochemical analyses
- The ability to develop solutions to biochemical problems
- The capability to conduct research focused on biochemistry, genetics, and biotechnology applications.
- Contributing to areas such as health, environment, agriculture, and industry by applying biochemistry knowledge.
Language of Instruction: Education in the Department of Biochemistry is provided in Turkish. The undergraduate program spans four years (8 semesters) and consists of both theoretical and practical (laboratory) courses. Students are equipped with fundamental and advanced knowledge and skills in the field of biochemistry. The department also offers a two-year (4 semesters) Master's program with a thesis.
Infrastructure: The Biological Master's Program with Thesis is an advanced study program that offers students the opportunity to engage in work and laboratory-based research in a scientifically significant and relevant area. At its core, the program provides students with the opportunity to work in the ALUM research laboratories within our university. It aims to bridge the gap between less research-focused undergraduate degrees and advanced postgraduate education. By the end of the Master’s program, students will be fully equipped for a broad range of careers, including conducting advanced research in industry or pursuing any doctoral program.

Double Major/Minor Programs
Double Major Program: It provides students with the opportunity to earn an additional undergraduate degree in a field of interest outside their primary area of study. Through this program, students can complete coursework in two distinct departments and graduate with diplomas in both fields, broadening their academic and professional qualifications.
Minor Program: It allows students to take a specified number of courses in an area of interest outside their primary field of study. Upon completing the minor program, students receive an official certificate in that area; however, this does not equate to a second undergraduate diploma.

Career
Objective of the Department: The objective of the department is to train a workforce capable of making necessary contributions in scientific and technological fields related to natural sciences such as physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as health sciences, nutrition, and environmental issues. The department aims to equip students with a strong work discipline, efficiency, and entrepreneurship skills.
Current Status and Future of the Department: The Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science and Letters, Iğdır University, was established in 2017 and offers education at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The undergraduate program aims to equip students with both theoretical and practical knowledge in biochemistry, as well as to provide competence in biochemical research and analysis. Additionally, with strong infrastructure and laboratory facilities in the field of biochemistry, students are able to conduct in-depth research in this area.
The Department of Biochemistry also offers a Master's program with Thesis, which lasts for 2 years (4 semesters). This program is research-oriented, and students work on a research project determined in collaboration with their main researcher. The written thesis is evaluated through an oral examination. Graduate education in biochemistry is designed to train students as effective and professional scientists, equipping them with competence in all fundamental stages of research science.
In the future, the Department of Biochemistry aims to increase its research capacity, offer a broader perspective through international collaborations, and create more opportunities for students in rapidly developing fields such as biotechnology. With the expansion of Master's and PhD programs, the department plans to establish a strong position both in academia and in the industrial sector.
